Spring and summer in Toronto bring the end of the 2013 season for Toronto Rock Lacrosse and the start of Toronto Blue Jays baseball. The Blue Jays make Toronto’s Rogers Centre home field through spring and summer. Head to the park early on Sunday, June 23rd for a collectible Blue Jays Beach Towel, or on July 1st for the Replica Red Blue Jays cap. Music and film fans experience 800 bands and 40 films over 7 days at Toronto’s North by Northeast Festival. From June 10th to 16th venues including Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, The Opera House and Yonge-Dundas Square fill with comedy, music, film and art.
Northeast of downtown Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario, the community of Oshawa celebrates summer at the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens and the 2013 Peony Festival. Enjoy the gardens and one of Canada’s largest collections of peonies featuring more than 300 varieties, June 8th and 9th.
Later in June, the Oshawa Folk Arts Council presents Oshawa’s Fiesta Week. The 2013 annual week-long multicultural festival is June 16th through 22nd. The communities of Ontario’s Durham region know this is the week to experience the Asian, Caribbean and European cultures of the Toronto area. Kickoff events on the 16th include the Fiesta Parade and Memorial Park’s Fiesta Concert – a great way to celebrate Father’s Day.
The Toronto suburb of Mississauga, home of Toronto Pearson International Airport, hosts the 2013 Mississauga Waterfront Festival, June 14th through 16th. One of Ontario’s top 100 festivals, MWF is now celebrating its 10th anniversary. Concerts’ featuring top names in entertainment, or simple family fun – the Mississauga Waterfront Festival has it all. Join the fun and performances at Port Credit Memorial Park in Mississauga, Toronto’s gateway city.
July marks the start of Richmond Hill’s 2013 Concerts in the Park. A summer tradition, the free outdoor performances are Thursday evenings at Mill Pond Park, and Sunday’s at Richmond Green Park. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join the music Sunday, July 7th or Thursday July 11th. Richmond Hill is 35km north of downtown Toronto.
Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons hosts the 2013 Newmarket Jazz + Festival, August 2nd through 4th. Events feature Justin Hines headlining Saturday evening’s entertainment among three days of concerts, music and arts. Newmarket, located 60km north of Toronto, is the hub of Ontario’s York region.
